Discussion Post #4: Suffs on Broadway

The musical Suffs on Broadway does a fantastic job of representing the fight for women’s suffrage by only having female actors even when representing male figures, and not glossing over injustices that occurred during the fight for the right to vote, highlighting the importance of intersectionality.  Two characters that were extremely important in the play were Woodrow Wilson and Dudley Malone, both being played by women and one of them being played by a Black woman. The usage of female actors, specifically when depicting Woodrow Wilson, allows for comedic irony to happen, which engages the audience better by lightening the mood, while also showing the hypocrisy of the ideologies that…

    Lorenzo Guerra | SUFFS

The musical Suffs that we saw on Broadway was absolutely incredible. It approached the representation of the women’s suffrage movement by depicting historical moments in a memorable way. Through countless songs, scenes, and a constant calling for equal representation, the production cast fought their heart and souls out for women’s suffrage. With an exclusively female cast, this was a big day for women. They fought hard during the movement and still fought for equal representation in all aspects of society for many years later; they deserve to be celebrated. These acts later paved the way for African American women to gain the right to vote through civil rights act under…

Discussion Post 3: Suffs on Broadway

The musical of Suffs on Broadway approaches the representation of the women’s suffrage movement through showing the sacrifices and hardships the women had to endure to gain the right to vote. The show represented both the highlights and the lowlights of their movement. It represented the marches and the times they felt proud about their movements along with the times they had to sacrifice their families and were thrown in jail. The show not only represents the hardships of women at the time but also black women who had to overcome race tensions as well. The challenges that they may have faced while creating this was the accuracy of their…

    Discussion Post 4: Suffs

Suffs portrays the Women’s Suffrage in the early 20th century and the challenges they had to face in order to get the vote to vote. One of the main characteristics of this musical is that all the characters in it are interpreted by women. This decision could be as a way to compensate for all the years women were not allowed to have a voice in society by making the main focus in an important place such as Broadway. The choice of this cast could represent a way or reclamation but also an affirmation of the importance of women in the modern society. Considering all the challenges they overcame; the…

Astan Diarra – Discussion Post 4

The visit to the New York Historical Society was very enjoyable as it allowed me to see more clearly what NYC was built on. I was also able to learn more about the people who made their art trying to bring old history to modern times to help people become more aware of the city’s past. One object that attracted my attention is the quote “We The People” made with different colored shoelaces. To start off, the quote is from the Constitution which is the document that helped create the U.S.. It helps highlight the fact that multiple different people were a part of the creation and it was not…

One object that fascinated me at the New York Historical Society was the Tiffany lamps. Their vibrant and unique designs made them stand out beautifully in the dark room. The intricate glass designs on the lamps featured different styles, representing animals, flowers, and more. Two of my favorite pieces were the dragonfly and cobweb shades. As Wood and Latham explained, ”Object knowledge emphasizes human connection to objects by understanding the lived experience of the visitor and how these experiences resonate with objects they interact with with in the museum”(116). When provided with background knowledge of these artifacts, we are able to connect with them on a more personal level. I…

Jigna Oza- New York Historical Society

Personally, I really enjoyed our visit to the New York Historical Society. It was a museum I had never heard of so I was unsure of what to expect, but throughout the trip I found many of the artworks very enjoyable and interesting to look at. I really love both painting and seeing other painters’ art. At this museum I was able to see various large paintings and was able to appreciate all the minuscule details in them and the ability to see all the brush strokes that one would not be able to catch when looking at a painting online. However, I wish we were able to explore the…

    Discussion Post 4: Suffs

Before seeing Suffs, I had looked up a synopsis so I could have an idea of what kind of show I was seeing. When I saw the play, however, it was much more exciting than I had anticipated. The energy kicked in from the opening number with Alice Paul, the main protagonist. Paul’s relentless drive made her a powerful leader but also, at times, difficult to fully empathize with due to her “get it done” attitude. This tension is reflected in Carrie Chapman Catt’s character, who represents a more cautious, gradual approach, highlighting the different strategies within the movement. Their exchanges brought out the ideological divides that shaped the fight…

Isabella Yakutilov – Discussion Post 4 – NY Historical Society

Even at first glance, every object and artwork at the New York Historical Society has significant meaning and a deep history associated with it. Each collection and hallway shows a chapter of a history book in a unique, timeless, and touching way. Dr. Kelly Aliano’s knowledge of each of the stories associated with these artworks was truly impressive as it is often strenuous to properly deliver these historical stories associated with powerful people such as George Washington during the World War and the suffragettes as they fought for women’s rights. Specifically, the stained glass mural showcasing the Suffragettes movement immediately caught my attention for many reasons. This mural is at…

Jayden Blumberg – Discussion Post #4

The musical Suffs on Broadway approaches the representation of the women’s suffrage movement through captivating visuals, humor, and an all-female cast. The most exciting scene from the musical was when the suffragists were marching, led by the actor playing Inez Milholland. She was wearing gold armor and riding a horse. The scene was very flashy and powerful. There was a lot of humor used throughout the show. Interestingly enough, most jokes were still relevant and relatable to modern women. There was a lot of laughter and agreement throughout the audience. One comment that most of the audience related to was, ‘When women get married, they sign their lives away.’ Another…
