Jigna- Museum of the City of New York

    November 24, 2024 /

An object that captured my attention at the Museum of the City of New York was a dress I saw at the “NY at its core” exhibit”. The dress was long and had black and white stripes on it, plus a shoulder jacket that had buttons and a collar. The dress was designed by Norman Norell and Anthony Traina in the 1940s. The two designers formed the Traina- Norell label which introduced New York into the world of fashion where Parisian designers were previously not available to American citizens. Norell was one of the many NY fashion designers that helped New York gain its position as a hotspot for fashion…

    Jigna Oza- Opera

    November 13, 2024 /

Stuart Hall’s essay “The Spectacle of the Other” discusses how the media/ art can be often used to reinforce stereotypes of a certain group. This is something that I’ve noticed countless times growing up and watching a lot of shows. For example, I am Indian and have seen Indians being portrayed in Hollywood with strong accents and often having strict parents. For Madama Butterfly, the performance also in some ways reinforced the exoticism of women of color. The main character Cio-Cio-San is a young girl who is East Asian, willing to get married to live a better life. Her character alone already plays into stereotypes surrounding women of color being…

Jigna Oza- New York Historical Society

    November 3, 2024 /

Personally, I really enjoyed our visit to the New York Historical Society. It was a museum I had never heard of so I was unsure of what to expect, but throughout the trip I found many of the artworks very enjoyable and interesting to look at. I really love both painting and seeing other painters’ art. At this museum I was able to see various large paintings and was able to appreciate all the minuscule details in them and the ability to see all the brush strokes that one would not be able to catch when looking at a painting online. However, I wish we were able to explore the…

    Jigna’s Hamilton Analysis

    October 23, 2024 /

As someone who has always been fond of the acting industry, I’ve had to read and perform in various musicals. However, despite doing this for many years, I had never watched Hamilton. Being able to watch this musical in class I was able to finally see the hype. Lin Manuel, the creator of Hamilton, took many risks in the production of this musical and was able to open doors for what a musical could look like. Hamilton reimagines the representation of American history by elevating discriminated voices throughout history. Through casting many white historians as people of color, it symbolizes how the backbone of this country are the people of…

    Jigna Ozas Discussion Post 1

    September 10, 2024 /

This painting is called “The Lion of Saint Mark” by Vittore Carpaccio. The first thing my eye is drawn to is the lion. I specifically notice the expression of the lion and how its eyebrows are scrunched and its mouth is slightly open. Two wings protrude from the lion’s back. The wings come in different colors (red, orange, brown, and a bluish/green shade). The lion is holding a book in its claws that states various letters that are either in a different language or simply randomly put together. Half of the lion is on the ground where the land is a mix of sand and grass. Some trees and flowers…
