Jigna Ozas Discussion Post 1

This painting is called “The Lion of Saint Mark” by Vittore Carpaccio. The first thing my eye is drawn to is the lion. I specifically notice the expression of the lion and how its eyebrows are scrunched and its mouth is slightly open. Two wings protrude from the lion’s back. The wings come in different colors (red, orange, brown, and a bluish/green shade). The lion is holding a book in its claws that states various letters that are either in a different language or simply randomly put together. Half of the lion is on the ground where the land is a mix of sand and grass. Some trees and flowers grow throughout the land. The land farther from the lion shows most of the trees. The other half of the lion has its two legs and tail slightly submerged from the water, possibly signifying that it is coming out of the water and onto the land with the way its body and head are facing the land. In the water, you can see a few boats in the back and more signs of civilization farther away. There are various buildings in the background and a flag that is colored red. The left side of the painting has a lot more trees and buildings compared to the right side where there are mostly boats and a few buildings. The bottom of the painting is aligned with 5 heraldries that have different symbols on them. The sky has a few clouds yet due to the coloring of the painting the day seems dull and gray.
