The “NY at its Core” exhibit at the Museum of the City of New York was an amazing experience that taught me about New York as a whole. For example, I saw pictures of the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge which was fascinating to see as it is my favorite bridge in New York. The object that stood out to me the most was the maquette of the Statue of Liberty. It is a bronze statue by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi which became a souvenir in order to raise money to build the pedestal for the actual statue. It caught my attention because I have always enjoyed seeing this monument, whether driving over the Verrazano Bridge or taking the ferry. It connects to the broader themes of “NY at its Core” through displaying an important monument in the history of New York. Themes of freedom and aspiration come from the Statue of Liberty and that aligns with New York City being a place full of opportunities. It reminded me of the culture in New York as it is where dreams come true.

I really enjoyed this museum overall since I was born and raised in New York City. It educated me on the history of this amazing city and the exhibits were very interesting. I would definitely return to see more exhibits in the future and spend more time at each one. I liked how each object or artwork had a detailed description of the history behind it. I feel like I will spend more time reading next time and take in what is around me.
