Summary

Before entering the museum, I expected it to be about the history of NYC and how it came about. I was beyond surprised when I walked into exhibits mentioning hip hop and punk rock, doll houses, and even gingerbread sculptures. I found this museum to be one of my favorites, because it shows what makes New York City so unique. What caught my attention most was the movie room that had about 20 TV screens displaying different films that take place in NYC. It really brings attention to the talent that has erupted from the city, and the uniqueness it has to offer. There are hundreds of films created about the city and its diversity. There were movie clip compilations catered to the different activities your average new yorker does on a day to day basis. For instance, taking the subway, going to work, hailing a yellow taxi, moving into an apartment, and then finally having dinner were just a few of the most popular scenes in movies include. Then, the film transitioned to the films that take place in the five boroughs, respectively. However, the end is really what I found to be so touching. There was a main message: how the city is so diverse and filled with differences, but the most important thing is to always come together as people. That message really stuck with me. I find film in general to really give a short glimpse into the lives of others’ in a way that an “outsider” from that particular group or culture, may never understand. I found the message of unity to be really warming. I really think that this museum has quickly become one of my favorites and I would be so happy to visit again.
