Jayden Pooran’s Discussion Post 1
The Three Ball 50/50 Tank by Jeff Koons has three basketballs floating in a clear, fish-like tank of water. The distance between each basketball seems equal, showing the precision in this piece. The angles of the basketballs show the calmness of this work. The water is completely still, which gives off a sense of lightness when looking at this. Additionally, all three of the basketballs are half submerged (fifty percent) in the water, hence the title. There seems to also be an emphasis on clarity because the tank is crystal clear and shows the floating balls. Since it’s transparent, the focus seems to be the three balls. Basketballs are usually in motion and constantly bouncing around. However, this piece portrays them in a still environment where they are relaxed. This creates a displacement because the actual world is never like this, but this truly captures a moment of serenity. The element of balance is dominant because of the equal positioning in this. Something worth noting is one out of the three balls is different while the other two are identical. The first two are Spalding with a signature on it while the last one has NCAA on it. This visual contrast kind of shifts the focus to that one specific ball because it’s the only difference in the whole piece. It also disturbs the calmness with confusion because of the many possibilities as to why one ball is different. The writing on the balls are also lined up and not rotating which again shows its order.
